Prof Minoti Apte

Director, Pancreatic Research Group

The major research interests of the Pancreatic Research Group include alcohol-induced pancreatic injury, pancreatic fibrosis (scarring) and cancer cell-stromal cell interactions in pancreatic cancer. The Pancreatic Research Group has received continuous research support from the NHMRC/DVA since 1987 and is internationally acknowledged as the leading research group in the field of alcoholic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and pancreatic scarrings. This group was the first in the world to develop a method to isolate and culture pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs), now established as key effector cells in pancreatic fibrosis. This technique provided a much needed in vitro model for research into the mechanisms responsible for pancreatic scarring, which is a prominent feature of chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. The overall aim of the Group’s work is to develop novel approaches for treatment of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer by targeting the cells (PSCS) which produce scar tissue in the pancreas. The international recognition of the Group’s work is reflected in the over 4000 citations of it’s papers (as at Jan 2015) and in the invitations that the Group’s members have received to speak at national and international meetings.
